One Billion Rising, the new initiative of Eve Ensler, Tony Award winning author of the Vagina Monologues, is a campaign that seeks to end violence towards women and girls. OBR UK Art Festival brings together artists, performers, dancers, poets and playwrights, in unity against violence. Once we are aware of something we can begin to change it.
The 14th of February 2013 will mark the 15th anniversary of V-day, Eve Ensler’s foundation to help women victims of violence around the world. One Billion Rising celebrates that day making a stand against violence towards women, which is why this year we are reaching out to as many organizations as we can. This year we will be working with museums and galleries across the nation, putting on exhibitions that highlight the issues at stake.
We will be having dance parties in institutions, and cultural centers in unity against violence. Working with established seminal artists such as Judy Chicago, as well as emerging talent OBR UK Art Festival will be putting on exhibitions, film screenings and a series of talks, using art and culture to help us rethink our social structures. Art has long been a vehicle of protest and an agent of change. Art is the most powerful the most direct and visceral way of speaking to people across boarders, and barriers. Art Motivates, art empowers, art opens people minds creating new ways of thinking. This is why I have wanted the OBR UK Art Festival as part of the campaign to bring together artists, performers, dancers, poets, playwrights, art lovers and the public in unity against violence. project ANNA is an artistic collaboration between Ewa Bathelier and Paulina Palian. It is a series of 10 dresses which symbolise evolution that ANNA undertakes from the moment she puts on the white wedding dress. Journey starts from the dress which almost unable her to move to the ultra mini black dress. All the dresses in between are a diary of the transformation. Each creation is shorter and braver; the white is gradually taken over the black. et just because dresses are lighter and smaller doesn’t mean ANNA has more freedom in them. Gradually the weight of the fabric taken from her body is added to the weight on her head. ANNA won’t ever become free…

With a distinguished panel including Bonnie Greer and leading figures from the advertising industry, ELF will be asking will be considering if brands and advertisers are communicating well with women and, if not, why? This event aims to discuss the way that brands and advertisers talk to women when selling their products, and how these methods influence gender bias in society.
Last month we saw some amazing feminist action from UK Feminista at their Feminist lobby of Parliament on 24th of October. Good news for womens rights and gay rights in the US and beyond with Obama being re-elected for a second term. Plus Katja, one of the Pussy Riot three, was released on probation in October. Also good news about the future of The Women’s Library. A new home has been found at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) the downside is they will not be able to maintain the building and will be vacating the purpose built library in Aldgate in 2013. Still it’s nice to have some good news and lots more positive feminist events and actions coming up this month and we all must keep standing up and speaking out to see real, positive progress happening.
This month don’t miss theMusic & Liberation exhibition.This amazing collection of zines, photos, art and music of the UK Women’s Liberation Movement from 1970-1989 and has been touring the UK this Autumn. Its final stop is London at Space Station Sixty-Five in Oval. Come along to the free opening event on the 30th November with a performance from folk legend Frankie Armstrong and a talk from Sadista Sister Jude Alderson. The exhibition runs from the 1st of December until the 13th January with a closing event featuring a documentary about Gina Birch (The Raincoats) band; The Gluts. The Reclaim the Night women-only national march against sexual violence and for gender equality, organised annually by the London Feminist Network is happening on Saturday 24th of November from 6pm. The Feminist Library are hosting a social on Saturday 24th at 2pm with bring and buy book-sale and refreshments. In October Storm in a Teacup and The Girls Are.. presented a show at the Lexington for New York band The Shondes, with support from The Tuts and AmiTY. London Feminist Film Festival @ Hackney Picturehouse

The first London Feminist Film Festival will take place at Hackney Picturehouse from 29 November to 2 December 2012. The festival will screen feminist shorts and feature films from women directors around the world, including films by up-and-coming directors as well as feminist classics. Each film session will be accompanied by a panel discussion featuring prominent filmmakers, feminists, academics, and arts critics.
The London Feminist Film Festival was set up as a response to the underrepresentation of women in the film industry, as well as to the lack of films addressing feminist issues and the fact that the representation of women on screen is often narrow and stereotypical.
The festival aims to celebrate women creatives whilst ensuring that this feminist ethos also extends to the films we show. It will be a celebration of feminist films past and present. The aim is to inspire discussion about feminism and film, to support women directors and to get feminist films seen by a wider audience.

Underwire, the UK’s only short film festival dedicated to showcasing the raw
cinematic talents of women, have announced the programme for their third annual festival, running 20 – 24 November at The Ritzy Cinema in Brixton, London. Featuring an eclectic mix of genres, themes and aesthetic styles across ten programmes, the festival welcomes two new award categories this year for Best Sound Designer and Best Actor. These ten craft awards aim to recognise outstanding female film practitioners working in the UK today.
Highlights from this yearʼs festival include The Art of Science, sponsored by the

“Underwire has boomed this year”, says Helen Jack, festival co-Director. “Our 2012 Tour across the UK has opened our eyes to the amount of female film talent we have in this country, and the duty we have to nurture it”.
Founder & co-Director Gemma Mitchell adds, “With a trebling in submission numbers this year, weʼre reminded of how necessary a festival like Underwire is. Inequalities still exist in the industry – for a multitude of reasons – and with each festival we try and address these issues and push progress forward”. The films in this yearʼs festival put interesting female characters at their center, featuring an OAP activist, an eccentric engineer, and a female boxer who battles with discrimination. With a mix of animation (Belly, Tosh), documentaries (Another Note, Racing Time), drama (Summit, Wild) and experimental film (Anatidae, Moments), these films will inspire and excite audiences. Alongside the film programme, UnderWire is hosting a day of affordable industry events on Saturday 24 November.
Sessions include Walking the Wire, a marathon workshop providing practical and empowering information vital for women working in the creative and media industries; In Your Own Hands, which looks at why DLSRs are changing DIY filmmaking from the avant-garde to the mainstream, and Script, Shoot, Slice, Screen will take an in-depth look at the craft of a short film from start to finish, through a series of Q&As and screenings.
The Cinema museum is a Victorian workhouse building crammed with cinema memorabilia from the 1900s the present day. Come and enjoy some scary lady silhouettes, the premiere of “spring Heel Jane” and storytelling with live shadow-accompaniment. Shadow film maker Richard Mansfield and storyteller Vanessa Woolf-Hoyle celebrate the anti-heroines of folklore and film we just love to hate! This evening’s programme of shorts will include the premiere of Spring-Heeled Jane, their film collaboration about a maniac robot stalking the streets of London in the Second World War.
Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start, and the event is expected to end at 22.30. Refreshments will be available.

Dear Teacups,
It’s been a very busy summer and Storm in a Teacup have been focussing their time and energies on supporting, raising awareness and coordinating projects around the Free Pussy Riot campaign. Storm in a Teacup joined forces yet again with Girls Get Busy Zine and Not So Popular, who we worked with back in April to put on London’s first Pussy Riot fundraiser. This time we decided we would form a collective: Lets Start a Pussy Riot to collect people’s creative responses to the Pussy Riot saga, the goal being that we will be compiling creative submissions with the aim of publishing a zine. We have also been sharing the submissions via our wordpress site, tumblr and Facebook page. Check out the website to see all the submissions we have shared so far. We also have just confirmed a publisher for the zine, but we can’t share the details just yet – but let us tell you this – its very exciting!
Lots of fundraising and support events for Pussy Riot have popped up around London from the Royal Court to the upcoming Donmar Warehouse’s production of Julius Caesar (with Pussy Riot balaclavas and an all female cast) the Pussy Riot grrls have penetrated far beyond the media hype, they have inspired a generation, and have mobilised support from the DIY grassroots and beyond. Pussy Riot have raised the bar for Feminist Activism and we want everyone to be a part of the revolution! Come along to one of the upcoming Pussy Riot fundraisersin London and show your support; On Sunday 9th of September, three promoters; Popular, White On White and Shatterjapan present a cracking lineup of bands and artists most notably Gaggle, Peggy Sue and Skinny Girl Diet plus much more at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen. Then on Sunday 23rd September Positive Action present another great Pussy Riot benefit with a great lineup; with headliners; Covergirl at the Buffalo Bar. There is also a protest being organised in London for Saturday, September 15 as part of another Global Day of Action for Pussy Riot.

29 November – 9 February 2012 || Donmar Warehouse presents; Julius Caesar Phyllida Lloyd directs an all-female company in Shakespeare’s raw and eternal study of power. The poster for the production shows women dressed as PUSSY RIOT. This production marks Phyllida Lloyd’s return to theatre, and to the Donmar stage, after her film The Iron Lady. Eligibility for UnderWire 2012
UnderWire looks to showcase all kinds of film – we accept drama, animation, documentary, music video and artist film.
Apart from the XX Award, films are only eligible for the category that they have a female creative for.
The XX Award can be entered by both male and female directors. The Award is for films which put interesting female characters at their centre.
Entries for all film categories must be:
• Under 20 minutes long
• Completed since November 2010
• British or Irish and/or the film must be a UK or Republic of Ireland production.
• Available for screening on one of the following formats: Mini DV / Digi Beta / DV Cam / .mov
Please note:
• The deadline for all submissions is 21 September 2012
• DVD’s submitted cannot be returned
• If your film is selected, you must include a SAE for us to return your Mini DV / Digi Beta / DV Cam after the festival.
• If you are successful, the screening format indicated on the form cannot be changed without prior agreement one month in advance of the festival. Please do not put inaccurate information on the form – if you do not have one of the marked screening formats available, notify us with your application.
• Successful applicants will be notified by 5th October 2012.
• We can only consider submissions which are entered with both the DVD/link, payment receipt and the completed application form. The Submission fee is £5 per disc (not per category)

• To give an example of what can and can not be submitted:
If the film is directed by a man and produced by a woman, then the film is eligible in the producing category but will not be considered in the directing category.
If the film is being entered into a category where the entrant shares a credit with a male, it is not eligible, e.g. it is written by a male and a female.
Only the XX Award can be entered by both male and female directors.
• If you are submitting one film, but have women in more than 1 key role and you would like them all considered, that’s great! You do not have to pay the submission fee for each category entered, but we do ask that you complete a separate application form for each category you would like us to consider the film in.

If you’re as sick as I am about hearing about the Olympics, or even sick of people saying they are sick of the Olympics then trot on down to the Fattylympicshappening this Saturday 7th of July. Amazing body-positive event, with lots of alternative sporting events to take part in or you can just come along to lend some friendly support. Also there is a very special Unskinny Bop Prom happening in the evening as the Fattylympic’s official afterparty.
Storm in a Teacup got some great press last month when TNT published an article “ The Rebirth of the Riot: Feminist zines and bands making a comeback” where we were interviewed about the resurgence of feminist art activity in London. We are also very excited to announce that we are joining forces with London Dreamtime to bring you another “True Stories on the Heath” event at Hampstead Heath Ladies pond on Friday 27th July. This is a truly special event where you will be treated to 5 artists sharing true stories in a twilight setting, with picnics and swimming in the magical surroundings of the Ladies pond. 30 November – 15 January 2012 | Music & Liberation: Feminist Music Making in the UK 1970-1980’s Exhibition @ Space Station Sixty Five, London. How feminists used music as an activist tool to entertain and empower women during the 1970s and 1980s. It brings together for the first time a diverse collection of women’s cultural heritage to inspire and inform contemporary audiences about the politics of music making. STORM IN A TEACUP is a London-based collective set up with the aim of promoting women in the arts.
Fed up with finding no platform for our amazingly talented female musician, writer, poet, artist and illustrator friends we decided to do something about it. The project has now escalated with a fanzine, club nights and record label all in the pipeline!
Following the successful launch of our zine and clubnight we want to spread the word and get as many people as we can to join our group. So whether you want to play a gig at one of our events, write for the fanzine or just want to meet like-minded people, then join our group and get in touch.
In 2010 STORM IN A TEACUP helped to programme LADYFEST TEN festival celebrating 10 years of the feminist arts DIY subculture with a 3 day festival of music and arts. In 2011 STORM IN A TEACUP were invited to be a part of the first ever Women of the World Festival at the Southbank Centre and created a limited edition commemorative Zine. SIATC are now digital advocates for the 2012 festival.
Since 2011 STORM IN A TEACUP have also actively supported East London Fawcett Group and their campaigns.
In 2012 Storm in a Teacup joined together with two other collectives; Girls Get Busy & Not So Popular to start a super collective; LETS START A PUSSY RIOT in order to fund raise and raise awareness about jailed Russian punk band PUSSY RIOT. The LETS START A PUSSY RIOT collective are currently working on a book featuring creative responses from the PUSSY RIOT movement.
We are also currently planning lots more feminist cross-cultural collaborative events for 2013.
