SIATC *UPDATE* DECEMBER 2012

Dear Teacups,

*Seasons Greetings and Best Wishes for the New Year!*

2012 has been an action packed year full of feminist activism, and Women’s equality and LBGTQ rights have increasingly become the frontline for discussion and debate in our evolving and changing society – from the US elections, to the Church of England; it’s very exciting times and feminism has been more relevant than ever. This year has also seen Pussy Riot raise the bar for feminist activism in the arts, reminding us to hold onto the freedom of expression that sometimes we take for granted, and inspired us all to remember the power of politics in our art, and we have responded with art, collaborative projects, protest and events that have shown the power of feminist action on a global scale.

Thanks to all that have been involved and those of you who came along to our events like the “Pussy Riot Fundraiser” presented by Storm in a Teacup alongside; Not So Popular & Girls Get Busy at The Shacklewell Arms in April, our “Herstory” Storytelling event on Hampstead Heath presented alongside London Dreamtime in August and The Shondes, The Tuts and Amity show presented by SIATC alongside The Girls Are at The Lexington in October.

We are also really excited about the new year, when we have an exciting announcement to make about our Lets Start a Pussy Riot zine in January and we are planning to be involved in the Women on the World Festival at The Southbank in March.

Some great seasonal delights coming up in the lead up towards Christmas; The first ever Queer Zine Fest in London is happening on Saturday 8th December. Check out the coverage in The Independent  and Diva Magazine. For full Zinster lineup see the Facebook Event. Also in South London is a new Riot Grrl/queer night; Bloody Ice Cream on Saturday 1st December with an awesome lineup; Skinny Girl Diet, Ethical Debating Society and My Therapist Says Hot Damn. For more information see the Facebook Event.

On 6th December East London Fawcett Group are launch their Cutting Women Out report into how austerity cuts have affected women living in Islington. With a panel including Emily Thornberry MP  and Clr Catherine West of Islington Council. Places are limited so please get in touch by emailing; info@eastlondonfawcett.org.uk  if you wish to attend. SIATC *UPDATE* NOVEMBER 2012

SIATC *UPDATE* NOVEMBER

Dear Teacups,

Last month we saw some amazing feminist action from UK Feminista at their Feminist lobby of Parliament on 24th of October. Good news for womens rights and gay rights in the US and beyond with Obama being re-elected for a second term. Plus Katja, one of the Pussy Riot three, was released on probation in October. Also good news about the future of The Women’s Library. A new home has been found at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) the downside is they will not be able to maintain the building and will be vacating the purpose built library in Aldgate in 2013. Still it’s nice to have some good news and lots more positive feminist events and actions coming up this month and we all must keep standing up and speaking out to see real, positive progress happening.

This month don’t miss the Music & Liberation exhibition. This amazing collection of zines, photos, art and music of the UK Women’s Liberation Movement from 1970-1989 and has been touring the UK this Autumn. Its final stop is London at Space Station Sixty-Five in Oval. Come along to the free opening event on the 30th November with a performance from folk legend Frankie Armstrong and a talk from Sadista Sister Jude Alderson. The exhibition runs from the 1st of December until the 13th January with a closing event featuring a documentary about Gina Birch (The Raincoats) band; The Gluts. For more info about the archive check out the Women Liberation Music Archive website.

The  Reclaim the Night women-only national march against sexual violence and for gender equality, organised annually by the London Feminist Network is happening on Saturday 24th of November from 6pm. The Feminist Library are hosting a social on Saturday 24th at 2pm with bring and buy book-sale and refreshments. East London Fawcett Group will be marching together and hosting a info stall, so get in touch with them if you want to get involved.

This month there are also some fantastic feminist film festivals coming up; Underwire Fest from the 20th – 24th November and London Feminist Film Fest at Hackney Picturehouse from 29th November until 2nd December with a selection of Feminist films and documentaries. Underwire Festival boast a full week long programme of short films shortlisted for prizes in screenwriting, directing and producing. For full programme of film showings and events please follow links below.

Another date for the diary; Saturday 8th December is the first ever Queer Zine Fest London. It’s a fantastic lineup of zine distros, zine artists, workshops and much, much more. They got some great coverage in The Independent last week.

In October Storm in a Teacup and The Girls Are.. presented a show at the Lexington for New York band The Shondes, with support from The Tuts and AmiTY. Thank you to all involved and that came along in support it was a great night, great crowd and check out The Girls Are review which features some great photos (yip I just said great three times!!!). and hopefully we might have some more fem fronted gigs on the cards in the new year. In other Storm in a Teacup news we are itching to tell you about the project that has been brewing for a few months now for Lets Start a Pussy Riot. We hope to soon be able to reveal what we have planned alongside some amazing artists, musicians and collectives. We really wanted to create a lasting legacy and impact with this project and so its well worth the wait.

East London Fawcett Group
launched their new website and continue their amazing work with the Great East London Art Audit and getting some well deserved press coverage. They have also got some great events coming up including; a discussion about Women & Sport on the 25th November, which includes a special screening Melanie Brown’s photo-film, Fighting for Peace: Kabul’s Female Boxers, the event is also a fundraiser to support female boxers in Afghanistan. Also on Saturday 24th November ELF free Artist Talk; “The role of the Artist” where artists Rose Gibbs and Leah Capaldi will discuss Capaldi’s new work at the Zabludowicz collection with a special emphasis on the role of the artist, and the trials and tribulations of an art education. Synopsis:

In the early 1980s, American hardcore punk began to take shape in Washington, DC. This subculture blossomed in the United States, with bands like Minor Threat at the helm. Women, however, did not gain much visibility in this community until the 1990s, when Bikini Kill and their contemporaries spawned the riot grrrl movement.

Although Bikini Kill and riot grrrl made undeniably important contributions to underground music and culture, their peers and predecessors are often forgotten, both by music fans and feminists. From the Back of the Room aims to remedy this, beginning in 1981.

Cynthia Connolly, Tribe 8, Chris Boarts-Larson of Slug and Lettuce, and others take the viewer through these early years, exploring the development of the role of women in the national music scene through venues like ABC No Rio, and 924 Gilman Street. Kathleen Hanna and Allison Wolfe discuss the rise of riot grrrl, and the movement’s staying power in underground music is disputed by many of the women interviewed.

The film moves through the 1990s with interviews from Naked Aggression, Submission Hold, Look Back and Laugh, Sick Fix, and Detestation. Booking agents, zine authors, musicians, and artists are all featured, giving the film a well-rounded scope. Red Thread, Condenada and Bruise Violet bring the viewer into the present tense.

Although respect is given to the riot grrrl movement, the second half of the film focuses more specifically on the variety of issues that face women in underground music. Beauty ideals, sexuality, motherhood, race and sexual violence are all discussed. Hopes for the future, and advice for younger women close out this heartfelt portrait of women in music.

FROM THE BACK OF THE ROOM ZINE!

We’re putting together a zine to commemorate the event.
Topics: women + punk! Love letters to yr favourite women in punk, celebrations of queer women in punk, constructive critiques on punk scenes/cultures, thoughts on being a female-identified punk etc. Submissions (200 words max for written pieces and/or b&w illustrations, A5 size) should include yr name and any email addy/web site info. Send ‘em here: charlotte.richardson.andrews@gmail.com. Deadline: Sun 21st Oct.

*Freedom is in Peril defend it with all your might” –  Street Art by Expanded Eye

Dear Teacups,

It’s been a very busy summer and Storm in a Teacup have been focussing their time and energies on supporting, raising awareness and coordinating projects around the Free Pussy Riot campaign. Storm in a Teacup joined forces yet again with Girls Get Busy Zine and Not So Popular, who we worked with back in April to put on London’s first Pussy Riot fundraiser. This time we decided we would form a collective: Lets Start a Pussy Riot to collect people’s creative responses to the Pussy Riot saga, the goal being that we will be compiling creative submissions with the aim of publishing a zine. We have also been sharing the submissions via our wordpress site, tumblr and Facebook page. Check out the website to see all the submissions we have shared so far. We also have just confirmed a publisher for the zine, but we can’t share the details just yet – but let us tell you this – its very exciting!

Lots of fundraising and support events for Pussy Riot have popped up around London from the Royal Court to the upcoming Donmar Warehouse’s production of Julius Caesar (with Pussy Riot balaclavas and an all female cast) the Pussy Riot grrls have penetrated far beyond the media hype, they have inspired a generation, and have mobilised support from the DIY grassroots and beyond. Pussy Riot have raised the bar for Feminist Activism and we want everyone to be a part of the revolution! Come along to one of the upcoming Pussy Riot fundraisers in London and show your support; On Sunday 9th of September, three promoters; Popular,  White On White and Shatterjapan present a cracking lineup of bands and artists most notably Gaggle, Peggy Sue and Skinny Girl Diet plus much more at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen. Then on Sunday 23rd September Positive Action present another great Pussy Riot benefit with a great lineup; with headliners; Covergirl at the Buffalo Bar. There is also a protest being organised in London for Saturday, September 15 as part of another Global Day of Action for Pussy Riot.

Also DON’T MISS this month; UK Feminista Summer School on the 15th & 16th of September and SLUTWALK march in London on Saturday 22nd of September
