I Am Dora by Jemma Desai Launch Screening

Thursday 31st May 2012 6.45pm @ Institute of Contemporary Arts, London

*ELF(East london Fawcett) members and friends can get a discount if the quote ‘Fawcett’ over the phone or in person (subject to availability) for the opening night!*

Sigmund Freud’s Dora: : A Case of Mistaken Identity 1979
Anthony McCall, Claire Pajaczkowska, Andrew Tyndall, Jane Weinstock
+ Light Reading UK dir. Lis Rhodes’, 1979, 20 minutes

I am Dora in partnership with the ICA and City Screen are pleased to announce the launch of their first publication. I am Dora will focus on how female characters in film affect women’s perceptions of themselves. A subjective and personal study, I am Dora explores how and why women identify with one another and what this means when the identification is with a flawed or misunderstood character.

Using the well-documented feminist significance of Freud’s Dora as a template, each screening focuses on a new character and is accompanied by a publication that maps Jemma’s journey to understand her identification with the character. Each publication will be launched with a screening of a film aimed at encouraging a more subjective engagement with film and film theory.

Jemma Desai works at various International Film Festivals as a producer, curator and writer. She is the founder of I am Dora.
The launch event marks Part 1, which will focus on Sigmund Freud’s Dora: A Case of Mistaken Identity.

Sigmund Freud’s Dora: A Case of Mistaken Identity (USA 1979, 40 mins) was directed by Anthony McCall, Claire Pajaczkowska, Andrew Tyndall, and Jane Weinstock. In their original film notes the filmmakers stated that they chose Dora as a ‘test’ so as to encourage a discussion on “Understanding hysteria not only as an illness but as the inevitable predicament of women who speak in a language which has never been ours, a phallocentric language” and “to analyse the language, how it represents. Freud’s representation of Dora, the representation of female sexuality in psychoanalytical theory, and representation in films”
Interspersing a recreation of Freud’s failed analysis of Dora with clips from television advertising and pornography, as well as exchanges with her mother, the filmmakers explore the status of the female as the objectified site of sexual desire. The resulting film interrogates psychoanalysis, the iconography of the mother and filmmaking itself as complicit in ‘representing’ the female.

The film plays with Lis Rhodes’ Light Reading 1979, 20 mins
“The bloodstained bed suggest a crime..No answers are given, after the torrrent of words at the beginning of the film, all the film offers are closed images and more questions..Is it even blood on the bed, what fracture is there between seeing and certainty? If there has been a crime, ‘she’ might still be victim..How can a crime of such complexity and continuity be ‘solved’? The voice searches for clues, sifting through them, reading and re-reading until the words and letters loom up nightmarishly, no longer hung on the structure of language.”

Felicity Sparrow, Her Image Fades as her Voice Rises, Arts Council of Great Britain 1983

The event will include a short introduction and an informal discussion following the films in the ICA bar. The first 50 tickets sold will receive a complimentary copy of the publication.

SIATC *UPDATE* MAY 2012

Dear Teacups,

First of all a HUGE thank you to everyone who came down to show their support at the Free Pussy Riot Fundraiser @ The Shacklewell Arms on the 23rd of April! We raised £370.00 for the Pussy Riot grrls. If you didn’t make it to our event and would like to donate to the cause please visit the Free Pussy Riot website. Storm in a Teacup, Girls Get Busy and Not So Popular are working on a collaborative zine to continue to raise funds and awareness of the Free Pussy Riot campaign. Keep your eyes peeled for more news about this soon.

Not So Popular interviewed Viv Albertine (The Slits), watch the interview here where Viv talks about Pussy Riot and Feminism.

We were really upset to hear that the UK’s finest Women’s archive The Women’s Library is under threat. The library, home to the largest collection of women’s writing in Europe, will see its opening hours slashed if it can’t secure extra funds by the end of the year. This could mean if they can’t rehome, find a sponsor or secure a huge amount of funding they may only be able to open one day per week from December 2012. Help save The Women’s library by spreading the word and SIGN THIS PETITION NOW!

One of our alltime favourite magaZINEs Magpie Mag Issue 5 has just become available, and it includes an interview with me, where I talk about Storm in a Teacup, folk and feminism – it’s a beautiful publication that also includes a compilation CD, to get your hands on a copy visit the Magpie Magazine website. A little quote from the interview; “People are walking up to the fact that they shouldn’t wait around for things to change or for people in power to change them, we need to stand up, speak out and make positive change happen ourselves”.

The most extensive collection of women’s history in the UK is under threat

Katie Allenwrites;

Author, comedian and broadcaster Sandi Toksvig has spoken out about the threatened Women’s Library in east London, which is facing severe cuts.

The collection, which is based in a special building within London Metropolitan University, includes books and periodicals dating back to the 16th century, including first editions of novels by Mary Wollstonecraft, Virginia Woolf and the Bronte sisters.

Toksvig, who has given talks at the library, said: “The Women’s Library is one of the most inspiring places in Britain. The collection is irreplaceable and having access to it should be a right for all.”

The museum also hosts hundreds of other printed items, letters, textiles and other objects pertaining to women’s history, including the papers of suffragette Emily Wilding Davison, who was famous for stepping in front of the King’s horse at the Epsom Derby, dying later from her injuries.

The university’s board of governors said the library will have to cut its opening hours to one day a week instead of five if a new home is not found for the archive.

SIGN THE PETITION

The UK has always been a hub for Women’s and Feminist campaigns. Recently women and men who believe in gender equality have been engaging more fully with debates on this issue, seeking solutions and taking part in activism. Such discussions have been vital in reigniting old campaigns such as Reclaim the Night, and kick starting new ones such as the recent Slutwalks. Issues once thought buried in the back of public consciousness are coming to the foreground. Students have proved vital to these campaigns but until now there has not been a space to bring together student voices in a student-led space.

On the 12th May SOAS will be hosting a cross-university, student-led Women’s conference.

“Where Are The Women?” will bring together many voices to discuss current issues that affect both students in the UK and women internationally. From the cuts to Higher Education in the UK, to international issues; to becoming aware of your surroundings and getting involved in some self-defense; to getting creative and displaying your feelings though something more hands on, “Where Are The Women?” plans to be the forum for students to voice their concerns and create debate. We hope to see you all there!

PUSSY RIOT speak: “we realized that this country needs a militant, punk-feminist, street band that will rip through Moscow’s streets and squares, mobilize public energy against the evil crooks of the Putinist junta and enrich the Russian cultural and political opposition with themes that are important to us: gender and LGBT rights, problems of masculine conformity, absence of a daring political message on the musical and art scenes, and the domination of males in all areas of public discourse.” http://www.vice.com/read/A-Russian-Pussy-Riot

SIATC *UPDATE* APRIL 2012

Dear Teacups,

This month Storm in a Teacup are involved in helping raise awareness of the Russian Feminist Punk group: Pussy Riot. Three members of Pussy Riot are in jail awaiting trial with the possibility of 7 years in prison for performing their punk protest songs in an Orthodox Church. Feminist and Riot girl groups across the world are organising protests and fundraisers in support of Pussy Riot. Only last month St Petersburg passed new legislation to ban “homosexual propaganda” in a massive u-turn for gay rights in Russia. Would we be silenced if we happened to have been born Russian? Stand up in solidarity for Pussy Riot. Grab a balaclava, your electric guitar and meet us outside the Russian Embassy on 23rd of April!
