SHATTERJAPAN (www.facebook.com/SHATTERJAPAN) presents this special non-profit festival of music and performance spread over 2 days. Artists from various parts of the UK and beyond are working together at no fee to bring you this special commemorative event.

On 21st February 2012, members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot performed a “punk prayer” in a Moscow church for which they were arrested, detained for over 5 months and eventually sentenced on 17 August 2012 to 2 years imprisonment. With two of the three members remaining imprisoned (Nadezhda “Nadya” Tolokonnikova and Maria “Masha” Alyokhina) in separate and remote penal colonies, SHATTERJAPAN brings you 2 days of entertainment provided by artists from the UK & international music, film and performance worlds, to commemorate the 1 year anniversary of the sentencing, to appeal for the women’s release, and to celebrate freedom of expression.

LETS START A PUSSY RIOT

Loud, controversial, fearless — Pussy Riot undoubtedly ushered in a new era of feminism and political freedom with their protest acts.

The dialogue so explosively ignited by Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich continues in the book Let’s Start A Pussy Riot. Exclusively created in collaboration with the band, this publication brings together artists, writers and poets to explore feminism, LGBT rights, the power of collaboration, the role art plays in activism, women’s rights, and freedom of speech through the personal voices of Judy Chicago, Yoko Ono, Antony Hegarty, Kim Gordon, and many more.

East London Fawcett announce Art Audit Results

elf-art-logo

East London Fawcett unveiled their findings of their year-long campaign to examine the position of women with the arts in contemporary London.

The audit which looked at works from April 2012 – April 2013 gathered data on 134 commercial galleries in London, which collectively represent 3,163 artists. Gathered by a large group of dedicated volunteers, including a number of experienced researchers and statisticians, these figures will hopefully provide an objective basis for future discourse on women in the arts, and prompt further investigation of the area.

Check out the data and findings on the ELF website and the Guardian Datablog. The Guardian also analysed the results in this article “Women in Art: Why are all the Great Artists Men”
