SIATC *UPDATE* NOVEMBER 2012

SIATC *UPDATE* NOVEMBER

Dear Teacups,

Last month we saw some amazing feminist action from UK Feminista at their Feminist lobby of Parliament on 24th of October. Good news for womens rights and gay rights in the US and beyond with Obama being re-elected for a second term. Plus Katja, one of the Pussy Riot three, was released on probation in October. Also good news about the future of The Women’s Library. A new home has been found at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) the downside is they will not be able to maintain the building and will be vacating the purpose built library in Aldgate in 2013. Still it’s nice to have some good news and lots more positive feminist events and actions coming up this month and we all must keep standing up and speaking out to see real, positive progress happening.

This month don’t miss the Music & Liberation exhibition. This amazing collection of zines, photos, art and music of the UK Women’s Liberation Movement from 1970-1989 and has been touring the UK this Autumn. Its final stop is London at Space Station Sixty-Five in Oval. Come along to the free opening event on the 30th November with a performance from folk legend Frankie Armstrong and a talk from Sadista Sister Jude Alderson. The exhibition runs from the 1st of December until the 13th January with a closing event featuring a documentary about Gina Birch (The Raincoats) band; The Gluts. For more info about the archive check out the Women Liberation Music Archive website.

The  Reclaim the Night women-only national march against sexual violence and for gender equality, organised annually by the London Feminist Network is happening on Saturday 24th of November from 6pm. The Feminist Library are hosting a social on Saturday 24th at 2pm with bring and buy book-sale and refreshments. East London Fawcett Group will be marching together and hosting a info stall, so get in touch with them if you want to get involved.

This month there are also some fantastic feminist film festivals coming up; Underwire Fest from the 20th – 24th November and London Feminist Film Fest at Hackney Picturehouse from 29th November until 2nd December with a selection of Feminist films and documentaries. Underwire Festival boast a full week long programme of short films shortlisted for prizes in screenwriting, directing and producing. For full programme of film showings and events please follow links below.

Also in South London is a new Riot Grrl/queer night; Bloody Ice Cream on Saturday 1st December with an awesome lineup; Skinny Girl Diet, Ethical Debating Society and My Therapist Says Hot Damn. For more information see the Facebook Event.

In October Storm in a Teacup and The Girls Are.. presented a show at the Lexington for New York band The Shondes, with support from The Tuts and AmiTY. Thank you to all involved and that came along in support it was a great night, great crowd and check out The Girls Are review which features some great photos (yip I just said great three times!!!). and hopefully we might have some more fem fronted gigs on the cards in the new year. In other Storm in a Teacup news we are itching to tell you about the project that has been brewing for a few months now for Lets Start a Pussy Riot. We hope to soon be able to reveal what we have planned alongside some amazing artists, musicians and collectives. We really wanted to create a lasting legacy and impact with this project and so its well worth the wait.

SIATC *UPDATE* JULY 2012

SIATC *UPDATE* JULY 2012

Dear Teacups,

First up big apologies for the no-show of the June update (and the slight lateness of this July update) various difficult personal matters prevented me from getting it published in time. Hey-ho and on we go- here we are again for another bumper July update full of wonderful feminist friendly events the ‘big smoke’ has to offer. Not only is it World Pride this coming weekend, it’s also the Fattylympics! And out of town we must not forget to mention Bristol Ladyfest 2012, with an amazing lineup of music, comedy, film and workshops.

If you’re as sick as I am about hearing about the Olympics, or even sick of people saying they are sick of the Olympics then trot on down to the Fattylympics happening this Saturday 7th of July. Amazing body-positive event, with lots of alternative sporting events to take part in or you can just come along to lend some friendly support. Also there is a very special Unskinny Bop Prom happening in the evening as the Fattylympic’s official afterparty.

Storm in a Teacup got some great press last month when TNT published an article “ The Rebirth of the Riot: Feminist zines and bands making a comeback”  where we were interviewed about the resurgence of feminist art activity in London. We are also very excited to announce that we are joining forces with London Dreamtime to bring you anotherTrue Stories on the Heath” event at Hampstead Heath Ladies pond on Friday 27th July. This is a truly special event where you will be treated to 5 artists sharing true stories in a twilight setting, with picnics and swimming in the magical surroundings of the Ladies pond. If you are planning to come along please make sure you book your place by emailing; neckingernell@yahoo.com

DRUNKEN BUTTERFLY
Since local trio and Riot Grrrl 3-piece Drunken Butterfly recruited a new, hard-hitting drummer their music has hit momentum, grinding out a deadpan flutter to hard and heavy riffs. They’ll open our show. (14:00)

HYSTERICAL INJURY
Bath heroes and pioneers of the local punk scene, Hysterical Injury are a sure crowd pleaser and excellent testimony of the South West’s musical credentials. Catch them play songs from their debut album Dead Wolf Situation! (19:40)

RACHAEL DADD
Well known to the local scene and practiced on the national area, Dadd has toured with the likes of Laura Marling, Alessi’s Ark and Sons of Noel and Adrian, but her ethereal folk is independently strong enough to ensure a standout performance of the night. (16:40)

RITA LYNCH
Punk session legend and Bristol resident Rita Lynch will be there to pack an anti-folk shaped punch, growl, spit and all. (14:40)

ROZI PLAIN

SHE MAKES WAR

SHRAG
Brighton based five piece Shrag are steadily working their way around the country promoting their new album Canines, out now on Fortuna POP! Typical of their labels sound, they make bedroom pop to shout home about: full of the Riot Grrrl and punk attitude that influences them. (21:20)

STRAYLINGS
Channelling the sultry sweet howl of their debut Entertainment on Foreign Grounds, Straylings may not be the best known act on this list, but by the end of the night they’ll be one of the most celebrated. (16:00)

THE HORN THE HUNT
Once included in the fated witch house tag, Leeds band The Horn the Hunt transcend their scene to create haunting electronica with a gothic lick. Goodness knows what will happen, but whatever does – it’ll be a spectacle to behold. (15:20)

THIS IS THE KIT
Headed by Kate Stables, This is the Kit have been a staple of the Bristol and Winchester music scene since their formation in 2006. What The Frock! is delighted to be teaming with Bristol Ladyfest for the next night of all-female comedy – at The Lanes on Sunday, July 8, from 7.30pm.

Hot on the heels of the sold-out WTF! night at Arnolfini, WTF! and Ladyfest are taking over The Lanes retro bowling alley on Bristol’s Silver Street for one night only, and filling it with the sound of extremely funny women and uproarious laughter.

Your compere for the night will be the hugely talented Rosie Wilby, and she’s introducing an absolutely packed bill. So please welcome to the stage Elf Lyons, Zahra Barri and the side-splitting double act O’Shea & Ogilvie. For more details about the acts and the event, please keep an eye on www.whatthefrockcomedy.co,uk, where biogs and pics will soon be posted.

As if six fiendishly funny women wasn’t enough, WTF! and Bristol Ladyfest have also secured exclusive use of The Lanes just for you, so you can quite literally be rolling in the aisles… or enjoying some bowling at a special reduced price (£3.50). And as with all WTF! events, there will also be a raffle with comedy-fuelled prizes.

Remember, while it may be an all-women line-up, absolutely everyone is welcome in the audience. We look forward to seeing you there.

SIATC *UPDATE* MAY 2012

Dear Teacups,

First of all a HUGE thank you to everyone who came down to show their support at the Free Pussy Riot Fundraiser @ The Shacklewell Arms on the 23rd of April! We raised £370.00 for the Pussy Riot grrls. If you didn’t make it to our event and would like to donate to the cause please visit the Free Pussy Riot website. Storm in a Teacup, Girls Get Busy and Not So Popular are working on a collaborative zine to continue to raise funds and awareness of the Free Pussy Riot campaign. Keep your eyes peeled for more news about this soon.

Not So Popular interviewed Viv Albertine (The Slits), watch the interview here where Viv talks about Pussy Riot and Feminism.

Another great video from the event; Viv Albertine performing “Don’t Believe in Love”

We were really upset to hear that the UK’s finest Women’s archive The Women’s Library is under threat.  The library, home to the largest collection of women’s writing in Europe, will see its opening hours slashed if it can’t secure extra funds by the end of the year. This could mean if they can’t rehome, find a sponsor or secure a huge amount of funding they may only be able to open one day per week from December 2012. Help save The Women’s library by spreading the word and SIGN THIS PETITION NOW!

One of our alltime favourite magaZINEs Magpie Mag Issue 5 has just become available, and it includes an interview with me, where I talk about Storm in a Teacup, folk and feminism – it’s a beautiful publication that also includes a compilation CD, to get your hands on a copy visit the Magpie Magazine website. A little quote from the interview; “People are walking up to the fact that they shouldn’t wait around for things to change or for people in power to change them, we need to stand up, speak out and make positive change happen ourselves”.

The Great East London Art Audit continues this month on Saturday 12th of May at the TATE modern! PUSSY RIOT speak: “we realized that this country needs a militant, punk-feminist, street band that will rip through Moscow’s streets and squares, mobilize public energy against the evil crooks of the Putinist junta and enrich the Russian cultural and political opposition with themes that are important to us: gender and LGBT rights, problems of masculine conformity, absence of a daring political message on the musical and art scenes, and the domination of males in all areas of public discourse.” http://www.vice.com/read/A-Russian-Pussy-Riot

SIATC *UPDATE* APRIL 2012

SIATC *UPDATE* APRIL 2012

Dear Teacups,

This month Storm in a Teacup are involved in helping raise awareness of the Russian Feminist Punk group: Pussy Riot. Three members of Pussy Riot are in jail awaiting trial with the possibility of 7 years in prison for performing their punk protest songs in an Orthodox Church. Feminist and Riot girl groups across the world are organising protests and fundraisers in support of Pussy Riot. Only last month St Petersburg passed new legislation to ban “homosexual propaganda” in a massive u-turn for gay rights in Russia. Would we be silenced if we happened to have been born Russian? Stand up in solidarity for Pussy Riot.  Grab a balaclava, your electric guitar and meet us outside the Russian Embassy on 23rd of April!

Storm in a Teacup, Girls Get Busy and Not So Popular have joined together to organise a Free Pussy Riot fundraiser on Sunday 22nd of April at The Shaklewell Arms, Dalston. An all-dayer of bands, workshops, speakers, djs, zines and loads of lovely things. Keep your eyes out for the full line up to be announced soon!

The next wave of The Great East London Art Audit is about to begin! Find out how to get involved with the East London Fawcett Group’s campaign to find out the truth about representation of women in the art world.
