ELF | Great East London Art Audit – Results Launch @ Calvert 22

ELF ART AUDIT results

Great East London Art Audit – Results Launch

Friday 24 May
7pm: Calvert 22, 22 Calvert Avenue, London E2 7JP

As part of Calvert 22’s exhibition ‘…how is it towards the east?’, ELF have been invited to unveil the findings of our year-long campaign to examine the position of women within the arts in contemporary London. We hope the body of up-to-date statistics we will reveal will provide an objective basis for future discourse on the subject. Calvert 22’s month-long exhibition and events programme comprises talks, workshops, screenings and new commissions. Fostering conversations on subjects such as how histories are written and recorded in print and on screen, the programme is partially an opportunity to critically examine modes of self-organisation.

Tamsyn Challenger | Monoculture Exhibition @ Beaconsfield

TAMEXHIBITION

Tamsyn Challenger
Monoculture

20 February – 13 April 2013
Wednesday – Saturday, 11am-5pm

Exhibition opening event:
Friday 22 February, from 6pm

FACEBOOK EVENT: http://www.facebook.com/events/473154289414313/

Challenger’s venue-wide exhibition combines participatory sculptural objects with digital projection and a small farm.

Concerned with mass objectification of the self, the artist asks us to join her in questioning the level of control being wielded by a supposedly ‘free’ environment like the internet. Themes of habitual performance, viral infiltration and feminine identity link earlier forms of human control by pseudo-sexual torture (exacted upon women who asserted their individuality) with cultural homogenisation on a global scale.

This exhibition premieres new works developed by Tamsyn Challenger during the artist’s residency with Beaconsfield since June 2012.

Monoculture expands beyond the galleries and works on the public in a truly viral way through online interaction and a series of related time-based events off-site.

The Monoculture exhibition opening event forms part of the South London Art Map LAST Fridays late openings: http://www.southlondonartmap.com
Beaconsfield hosts February’s  Bankside Afterparty with bar open late.

One Billion Rising UK | 14 Feb 2013

OBR-POSTER_17x22red-page-001

OBR UK Art Festival | 14th Feb 2013

One Billion Rising,
the new initiative of Eve Ensler, Tony Award winning author of the Vagina Monologues, is a campaign that seeks to end violence towards women and girls. OBR UK Art Festival brings together artists, performers, dancers, poets and playwrights, in unity against violence. Once we are aware of something we can begin to change it.

The 14th of February 2013 will mark the 15th anniversary of V-day, Eve Ensler’s foundation to help women victims of violence around the world. One Billion Rising celebrates that day making a stand against violence towards women, which is why this year we are reaching out to as many organizations as we can. This year we will be working with museums and galleries across the nation, putting on exhibitions that highlight the issues at stake.

We will be having dance parties in institutions, and cultural centers in unity against violence. Working with established seminal artists such as Judy Chicago, as well as emerging talent OBR UK Art Festival will be putting on exhibitions, film screenings and a series of talks, using art and culture to help us rethink our social structures. JOIN US!

One Billion Rising, the new initiative of Eve Ensler, Tony Award winning author of the Vagina Monologues, is a global campaign, a grassroots movement that from Lima, to Paris, New Delhi to Kinshasa, Manila, to Bahrain is clamoring, loud and clear, for the end of violence towards women and girls. On February 14th, 2013, One Billion women and the men who love them will rise up on the planet, joining Eve Ensler and the activists of her foundation V-Day to strike, dance, shake the world and shift the energy, empower women and girls and break the cycle of violence.

Art has long been a vehicle of protest and an agent of change. Art is the most powerful the most direct and visceral way of speaking to people across boarders, and barriers. Art Motivates, art empowers, art opens people minds creating new ways of thinking. This is why I have wanted the OBR UK Art Festival as part of the campaign to bring together artists, performers, dancers, poets, playwrights, art lovers and the public in unity against violence. Once we are aware of something we can begin to change it.

Nadja Romain, Chair OBR UK Art Festival

project ANNA

Sun. 24th Febr. 2013, 4.00pm @ Vibe Gallery, 100 Clements Road, SE16 4DG London

project ANNA is an artistic collaboration between Ewa Bathelier and Paulina Palian. It is a series of 10 dresses which symbolise evolution that ANNA undertakes from the moment she puts on the white wedding dress. Journey starts from the dress which almost unable her to move to the ultra mini black dress. All the dresses in between are a diary of the transformation. Each creation is shorter and braver; the white is gradually taken over the black. et just because dresses are lighter and smaller doesn’t mean ANNA has more freedom in them. Gradually the weight of the fabric taken from her body is added to the weight on her head. ANNA won’t ever become free…

SIATC *UPDATE* DECEMBER 2012

Dear Teacups,

*Seasons Greetings and Best Wishes for the New Year!*

2012 has been an action packed year full of feminist activism, and Women’s equality and LBGTQ rights have increasingly become the frontline for discussion and debate in our evolving and changing society – from the US elections, to the Church of England; it’s very exciting times and feminism has been more relevant than ever. This year has also seen Pussy Riot raise the bar for feminist activism in the arts, reminding us to hold onto the freedom of expression that sometimes we take for granted, and inspired us all to remember the power of politics in our art, and we have responded with art, collaborative projects, protest and events that have shown the power of feminist action on a global scale.

Thanks to all that have been involved and those of you who came along to our events like the “Pussy Riot Fundraiser” presented by Storm in a Teacup alongside; Not So Popular & Girls Get Busy at The Shacklewell Arms in April, our “Herstory” Storytelling event on Hampstead Heath presented alongside London Dreamtime in August and The Shondes, The Tuts and Amity show presented by SIATC alongside The Girls Are at The Lexington in October.

We are also really excited about the new year, when we have an exciting announcement to make about our Lets Start a Pussy Riot zine in January and we are planning to be involved in the Women on the World Festival at The Southbank in March.

SIATC *UPDATE* NOVEMBER 2012

SIATC *UPDATE* NOVEMBER

Dear Teacups,

Last month we saw some amazing feminist action from UK Feminista at their Feminist lobby of Parliament on 24th of October. Good news for womens rights and gay rights in the US and beyond with Obama being re-elected for a second term. Plus Katja, one of the Pussy Riot three, was released on probation in October. Also good news about the future of The Women’s Library. A new home has been found at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) the downside is they will not be able to maintain the building and will be vacating the purpose built library in Aldgate in 2013. Still it’s nice to have some good news and lots more positive feminist events and actions coming up this month and we all must keep standing up and speaking out to see real, positive progress happening.

This month don’t miss the Music & Liberation exhibition. This amazing collection of zines, photos, art and music of the UK Women’s Liberation Movement from 1970-1989 and has been touring the UK this Autumn. Its final stop is London at Space Station Sixty-Five in Oval. Come along to the free opening event on the 30th November with a performance from folk legend Frankie Armstrong and a talk from Sadista Sister Jude Alderson. The exhibition runs from the 1st of December until the 13th January with a closing event featuring a documentary about Gina Birch (The Raincoats) band; The Gluts. For more info about the archive check out the Women Liberation Music Archive website.

The  Reclaim the Night women-only national march against sexual violence and for gender equality, organised annually by the London Feminist Network is happening on Saturday 24th of November from 6pm. The Feminist Library are hosting a social on Saturday 24th at 2pm with bring and buy book-sale and refreshments. East London Fawcett Group will be marching together and hosting a info stall, so get in touch with them if you want to get involved.

This month there are also some fantastic feminist film festivals coming up; Underwire Fest from the 20th – 24th November and London Feminist Film Fest at Hackney Picturehouse from 29th November until 2nd December with a selection of Feminist films and documentaries. Underwire Festival boast a full week long programme of short films shortlisted for prizes in screenwriting, directing and producing. For full programme of film showings and events please follow links below.

Also in South London is a new Riot Grrl/queer night; Bloody Ice Cream on Saturday 1st December with an awesome lineup; Skinny Girl Diet, Ethical Debating Society and My Therapist Says Hot Damn. For more information see the Facebook Event.

In October Storm in a Teacup and The Girls Are.. presented a show at the Lexington for New York band The Shondes, with support from The Tuts and AmiTY. Thank you to all involved and that came along in support it was a great night, great crowd and check out The Girls Are review which features some great photos (yip I just said great three times!!!). and hopefully we might have some more fem fronted gigs on the cards in the new year. In other Storm in a Teacup news we are itching to tell you about the project that has been brewing for a few months now for Lets Start a Pussy Riot. We hope to soon be able to reveal what we have planned alongside some amazing artists, musicians and collectives. We really wanted to create a lasting legacy and impact with this project and so its well worth the wait.

They have also got some great events coming up including; a discussion about Women & Sport on the 25th November, which includes a special screening Melanie Brown’s photo-film, Fighting for Peace: Kabul’s Female Boxers, the event is also a fundraiser to support female boxers in Afghanistan. SIATC *UPDATE* SEPTEMBER 2012

SIATC *UPDATE* SEPTEMBER 2012

*Freedom is in Peril defend it with all your might” –  Street Art by Expanded Eye

Dear Teacups,

It’s been a very busy summer and Storm in a Teacup have been focussing their time and energies on supporting, raising awareness and coordinating projects around the Free Pussy Riot campaign. Storm in a Teacup joined forces yet again with Girls Get Busy Zine and Not So Popular, who we worked with back in April to put on London’s first Pussy Riot fundraiser. This time we decided we would form a collective: Lets Start a Pussy Riot to collect people’s creative responses to the Pussy Riot saga, the goal being that we will be compiling creative submissions with the aim of publishing a zine. We have also been sharing the submissions via our wordpress site, tumblr and Facebook page. Check out the website to see all the submissions we have shared so far. We also have just confirmed a publisher for the zine, but we can’t share the details just yet – but let us tell you this – its very exciting!

Lots of fundraising and support events for Pussy Riot have popped up around London from the Royal Court to the upcoming Donmar Warehouse’s production of Julius Caesar (with Pussy Riot balaclavas and an all female cast) the Pussy Riot grrls have penetrated far beyond the media hype, they have inspired a generation, and have mobilised support from the DIY grassroots and beyond. Pussy Riot have raised the bar for Feminist Activism and we want everyone to be a part of the revolution! Come along to one of the upcoming Pussy Riot fundraisers in London and show your support; On Sunday 9th of September, three promoters; Popular,  White On White and Shatterjapan present a cracking lineup of bands and artists most notably Gaggle, Peggy Sue and Skinny Girl Diet plus much more at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen. Then on Sunday 23rd September Positive Action present another great Pussy Riot benefit with a great lineup; with headliners; Covergirl at the Buffalo Bar. There is also a protest being organised in London for Saturday, September 15 as part of another Global Day of Action for Pussy Riot.

Also DON’T MISS this month; UK Feminista Summer School on the 15th & 16th of September and SLUTWALK march in London on Saturday 22nd of September

SIATC *UPDATE* JULY 2012

SIATC *UPDATE* JULY 2012

Dear Teacups,

First up big apologies for the no-show of the June update (and the slight lateness of this July update) various difficult personal matters prevented me from getting it published in time. Hey-ho and on we go- here we are again for another bumper July update full of wonderful feminist friendly events the ‘big smoke’ has to offer. Not only is it World Pride this coming weekend, it’s also the Fattylympics! And out of town we must not forget to mention Bristol Ladyfest 2012, with an amazing lineup of music, comedy, film and workshops.

If you’re as sick as I am about hearing about the Olympics, or even sick of people saying they are sick of the Olympics then trot on down to the Fattylympics happening this Saturday 7th of July. Amazing body-positive event, with lots of alternative sporting events to take part in or you can just come along to lend some friendly support. Also there is a very special Unskinny Bop Prom happening in the evening as the Fattylympic’s official afterparty.

Storm in a Teacup got some great press last month when TNT published an article “ The Rebirth of the Riot: Feminist zines and bands making a comeback”  where we were interviewed about the resurgence of feminist art activity in London. We are also very excited to announce that we are joining forces with London Dreamtime to bring you anotherTrue Stories on the Heath” event at Hampstead Heath Ladies pond on Friday 27th July. This is a truly special event where you will be treated to 5 artists sharing true stories in a twilight setting, with picnics and swimming in the magical surroundings of the Ladies pond. If you are planning to come along please make sure you book your place by emailing; neckingernell@yahoo.com

The Great East London Art Audit continues this month with a free gallery talk on Saturday 14th July at WW Gallery and a free gallery tour on Sunday 29th July still TBA ! Find out how to get involved with the East London Fawcett Group’s campaign to find out the truth about representation of women in the art world.
