SIATC *UPDATE* April 2011

Dear Teacups,

Spring has sprung and the teacups have started rustling up some exciting plans for our summer programme. Keep your eyes peeled as once we have announced some of our projects we will be opening up our meetings for all, so if you fancy helping out on an artistic or organisational level there will be plenty of opportunities coming up. Thanks to all you lovely people who came to our Zine workshops we organised for Women of the World Festival at The Southbank centre. It was an epic weekend, with lots of our favourite zinesters leading fantastic workshops. Special thanks goes out to Soupa Creative Network, Shebang Zine, Magpies Magazine, Nest Gallary, VV Collective and the fabulous music programmed by Emmy the Great, Kate Nash and Verity from Storm in a Teacup. Huge thanks to all the artists, musicians, zinesters and participants that got involved.  We will be showcasing and unleashing the WOW festival commemorative zine onto the world very soon. So if you want to see the fabulous work everyone contributed over the weekend look out for our May update. Dont miss this month;

Ellie Green from Storm in a Teacup and emerging artist Bex Massey recently launched Fine Art project; VV Collective, supporting and promoting female artists. Last week VV collective kicked off their new interactive street art exhibition ‘Goody to Guevera’. To view the series of 100 reproductions follow the trail from Pedley Street, E1 and even look out for a secret drawing. VV Collective invite artists and photographers to follow the trail and submit their interpretations and photos to be included on their blog and published in an artists book to be submitted to the Womens Library and Iniva – Institute of International Visual Arts. VV Collective: http://wearevv.wordpress.com/

This week our friends at Death Drawing will be hosting a very special life-drawing salon in aid of Japan; Knot for Profit on Tuesday 5th April. With Japanese rope bondage and live traditional Japanese music as well as an art auction. Also coming up this week RUMPUS Spring ball with 6 rooms of fantastical fun with live music, Cinema, Caberet, DJs, Circus and art exhbition on Friday 8th of April. Verity Flecknell from Storm in a Teacup will be performing a blues set and leading the first ever RUMPUS Kazoo orchestra.

Also this month; Panic Lab collective are hosting CUT IT OUT! a night of live bands, poetry and comedy at The Victoria, Mile End on the 30 April. You will remember Panic Lab from their amazing theatre programme at Ladyfest Ten. Verity Flecknell from Storm in a Teacup and Annette Barlow from The Girls Are… will be DJing as She Runs With Wolves.

Storm in a Teacup will also have a table at the London Zine Symposium on Sunday 17 April, so come along and meet Elizabeth Martin from Storm in a Teacup and buy the latest issue of the SIATC zine.

Dear Teacups,

What an exciting month! With International Womens Day 100th anniversary on March 8th there are so many fabulous events coming up including Ladyfest Manchester and the first ever Women of the World festival at the Southbank centre.

First up some great additions to our guest line-up for our Zine Workshops at Women of the World Festival on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th of March. The most exciting news is that we will have special guest acoustic performances in the Storm in a Teacup area curated by WOW festival performers including Emmy the Great. Expect fabulous, unmissable performances from some of the best up and coming female artists. All this while you can also take part in Zine Workshops lead by Soupa Creative Network. Talks with Shebang zine, Nest Gallery and VV Collective. Plus more guests including: Fat Quarter Magazine, Read Horse Zine and Magpies Magazine. Phew how exciting!

Dear Teacups,

This month the Teacups are gearing up for Ladyfest Ten Festival on the 12th, 13th and 14th of November. Tickets have just gone on sale, and what a fantastic festival line-up we have for all you lovely peeps. Check out the Ladyfest Ten website for full programme listings. The Teacups have been busy organising the Performance art, Visual art, Comedy and Music programme. So make sure you don’t miss the 10 year anniversary of the global DIY feminist movement.

Calling all artists and filmmakers its still not too late to submit your work to the open submissions for Ladyfest Ten art exhibition and film screenings. Ladyfest Ten film team are looking for female film makers to submit their work for screenings at the festival.

This Tuesday the 5th of October is the last in the series of SO SHE SAID; Storm in a Teacups monthly Ladyfest Ten fundraiser celebrating women and words. A night of spoken word, poetry,  storytelling and comedy, as well as three rather awesome guest poets, Hannah Ballou as our host for the evening plus OPEN MIC! So if you’re a storyteller, writer, poet or comedienne please email performance@ladyfestten.com to secure your slot.

Also roll up, roll up for the last three Swallows & Amazons life drawing salons of the season. On October the 12th we have a Japan themed salon hosted by Cherry Blossom Bakewell sharing Japanese ink and manga drawing techniques. With models Hanami Hannah and Empress Mazuki. On October the 19th don’t miss the fabulous Belles of London City morris dancing trio performing and posing for our English folk themed salon. Then on the 26th of October ‘Death Becomes Her’ Halloween themed special. Featuring werewolf versus vampire battle scenes, zombie prom queens, haunted paintings and Jackie-O-Lantern posing for your drawing pleasure. This month its all about participation, with so many opportunities for all you musicians, filmmakers and artists! Submission deadlines are coming up for Just a Girl Ladyfest Ten battle of the bands competition, run by our wonderful friends The Girls Are. For all your budding filmmakers there is still time to submit your work for Underwire female film festival. Plus The Ladyfest Ten art group have also just opened submissions for the Postcard Project, submit your art work for a chance to have it exhibited at Ladyfest Ten festival in November.

This Tuesday the 7 September we have the second fabulous SO SHE SAIDLadyfest Ten fundraiser at The Victoria. A night of spoken word, poetry,  storytelling and comedy celebrating women and words, as well as three rather awesome guest poets plus OPEN MIC! So if you’re a storyteller, writer, poet or comedienne please email performance@ladyfestten.com to secure your slot.

Storm in a Teacup are also excited to be helping to host the After Party celebrating the London premiere of NYC lesbian gang films ‘Hell on Wheels’, ‘Gang Girls Forever’ and ‘The Girl Gang Trilogy’ with acclaimed, award winning photographer and director: Katrina Del Mar at the Horse Hospital on the 18th of September. The film premiere starts at 7.00pm and later on The Storm in a Teacup girls will be hosting the after party at the same venue from 10.30pm. The indie/underground film director will be spinning dirty NYC girl music, special merch will be available, film visuals and much more. Make NY film contacts, schmooze and have a great time. We are also so excited to announce the return of the fabulous Swallows & Amazons alternative life drawing salons on 21st of September with a Circus and Carnival special. If the Teacups weren’t busy enough; Ellie Green and Elizabeth Martin from Storm in a Teacup will be giving a talk about SIATC collective, our zine and the role of new media in alternative art culture at the launch of the zine collection at The Stuart Hall Library on Thursday 30th September. Stuart Hall library, housed in the fantastic David Adjaye building at Rivington Place, Shoreditch is part of Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts). The library is FREE to join and open to members of the public by appointment. It houses one of the worlds leading collections of visual arts and culture and the zine collection will contain zines covering various aspects of cultural diversity, identity, & visual arts. We are so excited to have been asked to talk so come along to explore this fabulous library, celebrate zine culture and come and say hello.
