Yeastie Girls’ exhibition and call for submissions @ Cultivate, Vyner Street

YestieGirls_Flyer2YEASTIE GIRLS’ – a group show curated by CULTIVATE VYNER STREET

FACEBOOK EVENT: http://www.facebook.com/events/318107361622269/

‘That girl thinks she’s the queen of the neighborhood. I got news for you, she is!’ (Bikini Kill ‘Rebel Girl’)

The YEASTIE GIRLS show re-visits the ethos of ‘Riot Grrrl’ – the
underground feminist punk rock movement that took place in early
nineties west coast America.

The show aims to bring together today’s riot grrrl inspired creativity;
art, music, writing, zines……. Is riot grrrl still relevant 20 years
on? Are women now more empowered and supportive of one another?

The 90s riot grrrl movement allowed women their own creative space to make political statements about the issues they were facing in the
male oriented punk rock community, as well as in society; to express
their views on issues such as rape, domestic abuse, sexuality, and
female empowerment. As Tobi Vail (drummer with Bikini Kill) said, the
purpose of the Riot Grrrls was to fight against the things that kept
women divided, to start a discourse and to give importance to women and the things that they do.

So, has anything changed in the last 20s years? What issues should we be addressing now? Can we still make our voices heard? What form does Riot Grrrl creativity take in 2013?

We will be inviting artists to take part, but would love to hear
from ARTISTS, MUSICIANS, ZINE MAKERS, ART COLLECTIVES etc. who want to get involved; please CONTACT US with your ideas. All ideas are welcomed…….and no, you don’t have to be female, it’s open to everyone

– “We’re not anti-boy, we’re pro-girl” (Molly Neuman, Bratmobile)

‘March’ solo show by Bex Massey || 5 – 14 October

Storm in a Teacup highly recommends Bex Massey’s solo exhibition, Bex was one of the founders of VV collective, set up with the aim of supporting and promoting female visual fine artists.

‘March’ a solo show by Bex Massey

Private View: 6-9pm First Thursdays, 4th October

Bex Massey’s professional practice stems from an overtly figurative use of graphite and oils.  She is represented by Degree Art, has exhibited internationally and this will be her first solo show in the UK.

Massey’s work is based on current affairs, social issues and the way in which they are documented in the Media.  ‘At present we are bombarded with so much unfiltered information that crucial issues are often overlooked. Likewise, we view such a plethora of depressing imagery and shock tactic headlines-we have become almost dehumanised to an individual’s tragedy.  With such a volume of statistics and crude data being continuously thrown at us-is it just easier to overlook the harsh reality of the facts?  Too frequently we are told what to think, feel and do.’ (Massey:  2011)

Journalism and its manipulative impact on the psyche of the general public have long been a line of questioning in her work.  In light of recent developments in Media representation and the imminent verdict of the Leveson enquiry; the way in which news is collected and reported will change irrevocably. This series of work aims to document journalism in its current status.  As part of her residency at Central Foundation Girls School, she collated a body of work based on Media imagery throughout the month of March.  This ‘drawing a day’ project became the basis for large scale paintings, installation and collage.  Massey’s mismatching of imagery and text, coupled with scale and peculiar portrait crops, creates alternative headlines enabling the viewer to become the editor.

Show runs: 12-6pm, Thursday-Sunday (5th– 14th October)

5-9 Amhurst Terrace, Hackney, E8 2BT

SIATC *UPDATE* MAY 2012

Dear Teacups,

First of all a HUGE thank you to everyone who came down to show their support at the Free Pussy Riot Fundraiser @ The Shacklewell Arms on the 23rd of April! We raised £370.00 for the Pussy Riot grrls. If you didn’t make it to our event and would like to donate to the cause please visit the Free Pussy Riot website. Storm in a Teacup, Girls Get Busy and Not So Popular are working on a collaborative zine to continue to raise funds and awareness of the Free Pussy Riot campaign. Keep your eyes peeled for more news about this soon.

Not So Popular interviewed Viv Albertine (The Slits), watch the interview here where Viv talks about Pussy Riot and Feminism.

Another great video from the event; Viv Albertine performing “Don’t Believe in Love”

We were really upset to hear that the UK’s finest Women’s archive The Women’s Library is under threat.  The library, home to the largest collection of women’s writing in Europe, will see its opening hours slashed if it can’t secure extra funds by the end of the year. This could mean if they can’t rehome, find a sponsor or secure a huge amount of funding they may only be able to open one day per week from December 2012. Help save The Women’s library by spreading the word and SIGN THIS PETITION NOW!

One of our alltime favourite magaZINEs Magpie Mag Issue 5 has just become available, and it includes an interview with me, where I talk about Storm in a Teacup, folk and feminism – it’s a beautiful publication that also includes a compilation CD, to get your hands on a copy visit the Magpie Magazine website. A little quote from the interview; “People are walking up to the fact that they shouldn’t wait around for things to change or for people in power to change them, we need to stand up, speak out and make positive change happen ourselves”.

VV presents; “SHOW YOUR FACE” @ Cultivate

VV presents; SHOW YOUR FACE @ Cultivate, Vyner Street, E2 9HA

Private View: Thursday 26th of January from 6pm – 9pm

Exhbition from: Friday 27th of January until Wednesday 1st of February

“I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.” Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954)

VV provides a platform for emerging female fine artists as they are a highly underrepresented and an often over-looked group.

Our 2012 members showcase exhibition is therefore centered on the theme-the self portrait. In so doing we have curated a show that is not only breathtakingly beautiful; but which also examines the way in which female artists perceive themselves, and the darker undertones therein.

We cordially invite you to also come and SHOW YOUR FACE at the private view between 6pm and 9pm on the 26th January 2012.

Or if you can make the opening night, then from Friday 27th Jan until Wednesday 1st Feb, 11.30am until 6pm.
